Envision Your City: Help Shape the Future of San Marcos

The City of San Marcos is embarking on a General Plan Update beginning in 2019. The General Plan serves as the guiding document for achieving the community’s vision for the future, and the General Plan Update process will provide residents and businesses the opportunity to provide input to help shape the direction of the City going forward.

The General Plan is often referred to as the “road map” for the community’s future growth, resource management, and policy priorities that will be implemented over 10 to 20 years. The current General Plan was adopted in 2012, and the City Council directed staff to initiate a comprehensive General Plan Update earlier this year.

The General Plan and Housing Element Update process will take approximately two years to complete. During this process, the City will conduct community workshops, General Plan Advisory Committee meetings, and other forms of public engagement.

General Plan Advisory Committee

The City Council appointed a General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) comprised of thirteen residents and stakeholders to represent the community at large. The GPAC will work with City staff, the City’s consultant, and the public throughout the General Plan Update process and will make recommendations to the Planning Commission and City Council. The major topic areas that will be analyzed are business/economic development, building industry/housing, parks/recreation/open space/trails, and infrastructure/water.

Request for Proposal

The City has also released a Request for Proposal for consulting services to update the General Plan, Housing Element, and Zoning Ordinance.  

Get Involved

A Special City Council & General Plan Advisory Committee Meeting was held on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at 6 p.m. This kickoff meeting provided an overview of the General Plan Update Process and introduced the General Plan Advisory Committee. The next General Plan Advisory Committee meeting and public engagement opportunities will occur starting in mid-January 2020. The City encourages the community to participate in the process.
