Emergency Preparedness is an essential component to your well-being and survival after a disaster has occurred.  The following list will help you prepare for the next emergency.

Prepare

  • Maintain an emergency supply kit for any emergency.
  • In the event of a disaster, you may be without immediate help for up to 72 hours.

During A Disaster

  • Remain calm.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Use your family preparedness plan.
  • Stay informed.
  • If an evacuation is ordered, follow the instructions of local officials regarding evacuation routes and the location of shelters.
  • If shelter-in-place is recommended, local officials will provide instructions on necessary action. 
  • Do not leave your sheltered location or return to the evacuated area until it is deemed safe to do so by local officials.

Key Terms to know

  • Advisory
    • Residents should be prepared to evacuate at any time. It's a first level of warning, encouraging residents to monitor local news, gather supplies, and prepare for potential evacuation.
  • Evacuation WARNING
    • Indicates a potential threat to life and property, suggest that an evacuation order may be issued if conditions worsen.
  • Evacuation ORDER
    • Directive issued by authorities to immediately leave a specific area due to an immediate threat, such as a wildfire or other disaster. People in the designated area should evacuate immediately and without delay to ensure their safety.
  • Shelter In Place
    • Take refuge in a designated safe location withing a building during an emergency, instead of evacuating the area.
