The City of San Marcos has access to an Internet-based system through which recorded emergency messages can be dispatched to large areas of the city. The most widespread use of the system is by the Sheriff’s Department when it evacuates people from advancing wild land fires. The system can also be used to warn the public of other impending dangers such as chemical spills, boil-water orders, or dangerous criminal activity.
The phone numbers used in the system are taken from the 9-1-1 database, which includes the landline phone numbers registered by most major phone services. The system does not necessarily know your cell phone number(s).
All residents are encouraged to register their cell phones and e-mail addresses so that they will receive emergency notifications by visiting Alert San Diego.
