COVID-19 Update: Fourth of July Fireworks Event
At the City of San Marcos, the health and safety of our community is our top priority.
The annual Fourth of July Fireworks Extravaganza is one the City’s largest public events. The fireworks draw thousands of San Marcos residents, along with their families and friends, to public parks, parking lots, trails and open spaces throughout the City, with large numbers of people in very close proximity. This presents a serious public health concern due to COVID-19 pandemic.
As part of our efforts to prevent further spread of COVID-19 within our community, the City has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s event.
This decision keeps the City in compliance with the County's public health order, which prohibits public gatherings. This section of the June 9 order explains why gatherings are not allowed at this time:
"This Order is issued to prevent circumstances often present in gatherings that may exacerbate the spread of COVID-19, such as: 1) the increased likelihood that gatherings will attract people from a broad geographic area; 2) the prolonged time period in which large numbers of people are in close proximity; 3) the difficulty in tracing exposure when large numbers of people attend a single event or are at a single location; and 4) the inability to ensure that such persons follow adequate hygienic practices."
We appreciate the continued actions that our residents and businesses are taking to keep our community safe during the COVID-19 crisis. We are all in this together, and we thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to keep San Marcos safe and healthy.
