San Marcos features a proposed 72 miles multi-use trail system. 63 miles of existing trails are great for hiking, biking, running, equestrian use and more.   

Monthly Ranger Guided Hikes are FREE and occur on the first Saturday of every month. Sign-in begins at the meeting location at 8:30 am. The hikes typically get started at about 9 am and end at about 12 pm. The meeting locations and hike routes are described below.

 

Saturday, December 2 | 9 am to noon (sign-in at 8:30 am)

Heart of the City

An easy, three-mile hike on urban trails will follow the rail trail east and visit Hollandia and Mulberry Parks. A more challenging 8-mile hike with 580' of elevation gain to the northern city limits will also be offered.

Winter/Spring Hikes 2018

 Saturday, January 6 | 9 am to noon (sign-in at 8:30 am)

Las Posas Park, 2nd San Diego Aqueduct, Lake Wohlford Flume, Blue Bird Cyn.

This 7-mile hike will explore the 2nd San Diego Aqueduct north from Las Posas Road to Buena Creek Road and then head east along the Lake Wohlford Flume that transports water from Lake Wohlford to the Pechstein Resevoir at Blue Bird Canyon Road. There will be 580’ of elevation gain.

Las Posas Park to “P” Mountain

The challenging hike will depart from Las Posas Park and then to the top of “P” Mountain and hike to the aqueduct easement. We will return south on the aqueduct easement to Las Posas Park for a total of 6.1 miles and 840-foot elevation gain.

27th Annual San Marcos Trails Day - Discovery Lake/Double Peak

An easy, three-mile hike will visit the Discovery Lake, Discovery Creek and Cima Drive trails. A more challenging, seven-mile hike with more than 1,000 feet of elevation gain will be offered to Double Peak Park via the Cima Loop Trail and La Plaza Drive. A 2-mile interpretive walk along the Discovery Creek Trails will also be offered.

San Elijo Hills Park, Denk Mountain, Copper Creek

The seven-mile hike will go south from San Elijo Hills Park and up Denning Road to the top of Denk Mountain. Hikers will pass Denk Tank and explore the trail connections to Carlsbad. Hikers will return via Copper Creek and Copper Canyon. 850-foot elevation gain.

San Elijo Hills Tour

This moderate, five- to six-mile hike will start at San Elijo Hills Park and take in a circle tour of the San Elijo Hills area. Trails to be explored will include the Sunset, Canyon, Old Creek Ranch and Copper Creek trails.
