Training Opportunities

NEW! Lifeguard Prep Class* | $30 | Register Now

Participants need to be 15 years and older. This class will focus on:

  • Practice of the Lifeguard pre-requisite swim requirements at each class
  • Practice of the Lifeguard skills most people struggle with to help make training easier
  • Practice of key skills at a slower pace with more one-on-one feedback
  • Work with current Lifeguards to learn the skills

Registration for this class will give you a $30 discount for our Lifeguard Training course. *Participation in this course does not guarantee you will pass the Lifeguard Training course.

Lifeguard Training - Blended Learning |  Register Now

Jump start your career in any field by proving you can be responsible to protect patrons in and around the pool and by responding to as needed emergencies.  We are looking for many individuals from 15 years to 50+ years to join our team seasonally and all year long! When you register for this Blended Learning course, you will receive a link to complete the online portion prior to your course start date.

Prerequisites:

  • Be at least 15 years of age
  • Tread water for 2 minutes, hands-free
  • Complete the timed brick-tow (swim 20 yards, submerge to retrieve 10 lb. object, surface, return to start with both hands on object at surface of water, and exit pool with object in under 1 minute, 40 seconds)
  • Swim 300 yards of any combination of breaststroke or front crawl

Water Safety Instructor Course - Blended Learning | Register Now

Our Aquatics Instructors make a lasting impact on the lives of many in San Marcos. Water safety begins with learning to swim in a fun and positive environment. We are looking for individuals 16 to 50+ years ready to make a difference to join our seasonal and year-round team! When you register for this Blended Learning course, you will receive a link to complete the online portion prior to your course start date.

Prerequisites:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Demonstrate the ability to swim the following: 25 yards each or Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke, and 15 yards of Butterfly
  • Maintain position on back for 1 minute
  • Tread water for 1 minute

Job Eligibility Requirements 

Facility Attendants

Part Time Seasonal - starting at $12.00/hour

Cashiers must be 16 years old to apply for the position. No prior training or  experience necessary; multi-lingual abilities welcome. Proceed to Hiring Process section below.

Lifeguards

Part Time Regular or Seasonal - starting at $13.08/hour

Lifeguards must be at least 15 years of age to apply for the position and must be certified in Lifeguarding through a program equitable with the course provided by the American Red Cross. Lifeguard applicants must pass an In-Water Physical Assessment of basic skills. These skills are equivalent to the pre-requisites required of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. Evaluators will be able to determine basic probability of success in a lifeguard training course for the applicant. The assessment is as follows:

  1. Swim 300 yards continuously.
  2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
  3. Complete the following timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
    1. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards
    2. Surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object
    3. Return to the surface with the object and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point
    4. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps

Aquatics Instructors

Part Time Regular or Seasonal - starting at $14.26/hour

Aquatics Instructors must be at least 16 years of age to apply for the position and must be a certified Water Safety Instructor through a program equitable with the course provided by the American Red Cross. Water Safety Instructors must pass an In-Water Physical Assessment of basic skills. These skills are equivalent to the pre-requisites required of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. Head Lifeguards

Part Time Regular or Seasonal - starting at $15.54/hour

Head Lifeguards must be at least 18 years of age to apply for the position and must be a certified Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor through a program equitable with the course provided by the American Red Cross. Head Lifeguards must pass the In-Water Assessment of basic skills. These skills are equivalent to the pre-requisites required of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Course. See above for pre-requisites. Head Lifeguards must have at least one season previous experience as a lifeguard and water safety instructor.

Pool Managers

Part Time Regular - starting at $18.46/hour

Pool Managers must be at least 18 years of age to apply for the position and must be a certified Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor through a program equitable with the course provided by the American Red Cross. Head Lifeguards must pass the In-Water Assessment of basic skills. These skills are equivalent to the pre-requisites required of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Course. See above for pre-requisites. Pool Managers must have at least one season or more previous experience as a lifeguard and water safety instructor. Previous supervision experience preferred.

Hiring Process

Step 1: All Applicants must application - Application period February 11 - April 8

Step 2: In-Water Skills Assessment (not cashiers)

Once you complete your super easy application, Aquatics staff will contact you through the email or phone number you have provided to schedule your in-water skills assessment. You will then show up at Woodland Park Pool at your scheduled time and complete your in-water assessment. If successful, you will stay for your interview.

Step 3: Interview

Cashiers will be scheduled for their interview at Woodland Park Pool.

Lifeguards, Instructors, Head Guards and Pool Managers: If you pass your in-water assessment, you will stay for an interview at Woodland Park Pool on the same day.

Step 4: Human Resources Screening

If you complete all portions successfully and are offered a position, you will be contacted by a Human Resources representative to schedule your fingerprints, identification and background checks.

Step 5: Mandatory Team Orientation & Training

Mandatory aquatic team orientation and training is scheduled for May 4 & 5 from 8 am to 5 pm. Details will be sent to those selected for hire.
