SwimHappySMSan Marcos Aquatics staff are typically hired  between February and April for the following summer. This means that you should be thinking of getting trained now for next summer. View our job requirements and training options below and then consider the following steps to becoming a member of the team.

 

Training Opportunities

Lifeguard Training - Blended Learning |  Register Now

Job Eligibility Requirements 

Facility Attendants

Cashiers must be 16 years old to apply for the position. No prior training or  experience necessary; multi-lingual abilities welcome. Proceed to Hiring Process section.

 Lifeguards

Lifeguards must be at least 15 years of age to apply for the position and must be certified in Lifeguarding through a program equitable with the course provided by the American Red Cross. Lifeguard applicants must pass an In-Water Physical Assessment of basic skills. These skills are equivalent to the pre-requisites required of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. Evaluators will be able to determine basic probability of success in a lifeguard training course for the applicant. The assessment is as follows:

  1. Swim 300 yards continuously.
  2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
  3. Complete the following timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
    1. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards
    2. Surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object
    3. Return to the surface with the object and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point
    4. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps

Aquatics Instructors

Aquatics Instructors must be at least 16 years of age to apply for the position and must be a certified Water Safety Instructor through a program equitable with the course provided by the American Red Cross. Water Safety Instructors must pass an In-Water Physical Assessment of basic skills. These skills are equivalent to the pre-requisites required of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. Head Lifeguards

Head Lifeguards must be at least 18 years of age to apply for the position and must be a certified Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor through a program equitable with the course provided by the American Red Cross. Head Lifeguards must pass the In-Water Assessment of basic skills. These skills are equivalent to the pre-requisites required of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Course. See above for pre-requisites. Head Lifeguards must have at least one season previous experience as a lifeguard and water safety instructor.

Pool Managers

Pool Managers must be at least 18 years of age to apply for the position and must be a certified Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor through a program equitable with the course provided by the American Red Cross. Head Lifeguards must pass the In-Water Assessment of basic skills. These skills are equivalent to the pre-requisites required of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Course. See above for pre-requisites. Pool Managers must have at least one season or more previous experience as a lifeguard and water safety instructor. Previous supervision experience preferred.

 

Hiring Process

Step 1: All Applicants must complete an online application.

Once the application is live you will complete an online application by following the link to the right to a site called www.GovernmentJobs.com.

 

Step 2: In-Water Skills Assessment

Once you complete your super easy application, click on this link to sign up for an in-water assessment time. Then you will show up at Woodland Park Pool at the appropriate time and complete your in-water assessment.

Step 3: Interview

Once you pass your in-water assessment, you will be scheduled for an interview at the Community Center.

 

Step 4: Human Resources Screening

If you complete all portions successfully and are offered a position, you will be contacted by a Human Resources representative to schedule your fingerprints, identification and background checks. These need to be completed as soon as possible and prior to your start date.

 

Step 5: Mandatory Team Orientation & Training

Mandatory aquatic team orientation and training will be scheduled for a weekend in April.
