The City of San Marcos’ GIS, a division of the Information Technology Department, is responsible for the maintenance and distribution of geographic data to City staff and its citizens. The City initiated its GIS program in 2006 with the hiring of one GIS staff member, and with the help of both volunteer and paid GIS student interns, the GIS department has developed over a hundred different GIS layers and maps.
What is Geographic Information Systems (GIS)?
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) integrates spatial data (maps) and tabular data (informational databases) through computer technology. By linking these two together to create a variety of themed layers, GIS can provide a complete overview of the City’s infrastructure. In doing so, GIS revolutionizes the way that information can be used.
GIS is one of the basic building blocks of the City’s technology offerings. Our goal is to deploy GIS throughout the organization, improving the way services are delivered to residents and City staff. To this end, we support the databases, develop applications, and provide technical assistance to a growing base of GIS users.
The mission of the City’s GIS Program is to deliver timely and accurate geographic information system resources for the City of San Marcos’ staff and its citizens while providing quality services and developing innovative approaches in GIS.
Printable pdf maps are provided as-is, and represent some of the more commonly requested maps. All maps are in PDF format and require Adobe Reader to view. Users are advised that these map images are of relatively low resolution for Internet publication; other options are available by contacting the city GIS. Additional products will be available through this site in the near future.
